Work Access Permits | Sydney and Parramatta Light Rail

Why permits matter

The safety of you, our employees, passengers and pedestrian is our top priority. Obtaining a Work Access Permit:

  • Helps protect your work crew from hazards such as moving trams and high-voltage overhead wires.
  • Minimises the risk of disrupting the operations of our network or endangering those around it.
  • Ensures compliance with SafeWork and rail safety legislation.

The Danger Zone, as outlined by the diagram below, refers to areas on our near the light rail with a heightened risk of collision or electrocution. Our team can help you identify and manage this risk effectively.

How do I know if I need a permit?

Contact our Permit Coordinator to confirm whether you’ll need a Work Access Permit for the activity you’re planning by emailing us at SLR.Permits@transdev.com.au.

If a permit is required, you’ll be asked to complete a Work Request Form, which you can find here.

Completing a Working on Light Rail Induction is mandatory before commencing works for anyone working on or around the light rail. You can complete your induction here.

We’re more than happy to conduct site visits and provide in-person guidance on safety requirements. If you’re interested in this, please reach out to the team via the email address above.

Examples of work which requires a permit

You may need a permit for:

  • Moving equipment or vehicles across tracks
  • Using scaffolding, cranes, or elevated platforms near the corridor
  • Conducting excavation or construction near tram lines
  • Any activity likely to affect pedestrian behaviour or proximity to trams.

If you’re not sure if your worksite or activity may require a permit, you can refer to this map of locations along the light rail network. If you’re still not sure, please reach out to the team – we’re here to help.

Annual Shutdown Plan

We conduct several shutdowns during the year to facilitate works near the network that may not be possible during normal operations.

If you’re planning major or long-term works near the network, you may find our Annual Shutdown Plan useful.
