In 2024, the State of Victoria’s (Australia) Department of Transport and Planning awarded a nine-year, $6.8 billion AUD (4.2 billion EUR) contract to a joint venture between Transdev (51%) and John Holland (49%) for the operations and maintenance of the world’s largest light rail network, Yarra Trams.
- Yarra Trams is the world’s largest light rail network, with 24 lines on over 250km of double track, a fleet of over 500 trams, and 1,600 stops.
- The joint venture, known as Yarra Journey Makers, combines Transdev’s unrivalled multi-modal operations experience with the leading building, infrastructure and end-to-end rail and transport expertise of John Holland.
The partnership is committed to making this legacy network safer, more sustainable, and better performing over time.

Our history
Melbourne is home to the world’s largest tram network. Established in 1885, Yarra Trams today spans more than 250 kilometres of double track across 24 routes and 1,600 stops, serving a growing population of 5.3 million and carrying more than 147 million passengers annually.
This sustainable mobility service is vital to visitors and residents of Victoria alike, with Transdev and John Holland responsible for the next chapter of the network as the fleet is further enhanced by the introduction of 100 state-of-the-art G Class Trams.

- Shared network: 74% of Melbourne’s tram network is shared with other road users – cars, trucks, bicycles, motorbikes and more.
- Free Tram Zone: Introduced in 2015 across Melbourne’s central business district, enhancing accessibility and easing congestion.
